Sega has announced ambitious plans for the reboot of the popular Crazy Taxi franchise. Described as an open-world, massively multiplayer AAA game, the new Crazy Taxi aims to bring back the thrill of speeding through a city to deliver passengers to their destinations while performing stunts to earn points.

Originally released in arcades in 1999, Crazy Taxi gained popularity with console ports like the Dreamcast. During The Game Awards 2023, Sega unveiled new games in franchises such as Jet Set Radio, Shinobi, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, and Crazy Taxi, with teaser trailers showcasing each game’s return.

In a recent developer-focused video interview, Sega provided more information about the upcoming Crazy Taxi reboot. Producer Kenji Kanno revealed that the game will be a large-scale, open-world, massively multiplayer driving game powered by Unreal Engine. Players will be able to experience the classic Crazy Taxi style while exploring new mechanics, including a theme park-like map and U.S. West Coast-inspired motifs.

The new Crazy Taxi allows for multiple players to participate simultaneously, with the goal of retaining the game’s iconic style amidst the addition of new features. The game may also introduce different modes, such as driving a police car, expanding the gameplay experience for players.

Although there is no official release date yet for the Crazy Taxi reboot or the other games announced at The Game Awards, fans can anticipate a fresh take on the classic series. In addition to the Crazy Taxi reboot, Sega is rumored to be developing a remake of the original Jet Set Radio as a separate project, adding to the excitement for the future of these beloved franchises.
