According to a recent poll conducted by the American Psychiatric Association, pets play a significant role in promoting mental health among Americans. The study revealed that 86% of those surveyed attributed their positive attitude to their furry companions, with dogs and cats being the most popular choices. Pets were found to help reduce stress and anxiety, offer unconditional love and support, provide companionship, exude a calming presence, and act as true friends.
As Mental Health Awareness Month approaches in May, we are reaching out to our readers to share their coping mechanisms for dealing with life’s stressors. Your experiences and insights could potentially help someone who is facing challenges in their mental health journey. We are inviting you to send a photo with your pet to yourviews@oklahoman.com, along with a 250-word reflection on how your pet contributes to your mental well-being. Please include your full name, city of residence, your pet’s name, and contact information for verification purposes. Selected photos and comments will be featured in an upcoming edition of Viewpoints during the month of May, so don’t miss this opportunity to share your story.
