Signs Your Digestion May Be Impaired

Abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, and heartburn are common symptoms of a poorly functioning digestive system, which can be indicative of various intestinal diseases. Dr. Vu Truong Khanh, the Head of the Department of Gastroenterology at Tam Anh General Hospital in Hanoi, emphasizes the importance of a healthy digestive system for overall well-being and energy levels. Recognizing signs of an unhealthy digestive system allows for timely examination and appropriate treatment to be sought.

Stomach pain can be caused by indigestion, bloating, or muscle tension, and is usually not serious. However, persistent pain accompanied by fever, blood in the stool, vomiting, yellow skin, or abdominal swelling should prompt a visit to the doctor.

Constipation, characterized by having fewer than three bowel movements per week, can be a result of various factors such as diet, hydration, lack of exercise, or underlying health conditions. If adjustments to lifestyle and diet do not improve symptoms, medical intervention may be necessary.

Bloating, which is an uncomfortable feeling of fullness and abdominal swelling, can be a sign of poor digestion when persistent. Excessive bloating along with gastrointestinal symptoms like pain, constipation, or weight loss may indicate an underlying health issue.

Prolonged diarrhea can signal conditions like irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s disease, or ulcerative colitis. Black or bloody stools, along with abdominal pain or fever, could indicate a serious digestive problem that requires prompt medical attention.

Nausea and vomiting can be caused by food poisoning or illnesses like intestinal obstruction or pancreatitis. Persistent vomiting or signs of dehydration should prompt a visit to a healthcare facility for evaluation.

An unhealthy gut can lead to sleep disturbances and fatigue, as most of the body’s serotonin, which affects mood and sleep, is produced in the intestines. Unintentional weight changes may also occur due to gut imbalances affecting nutrient absorption and metabolism.

Changes in stool color can indicate issues in the digestive system, with bright red or black stools suggesting bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract. Dr. Khanh advises those with symptoms of poor digestive health to make dietary and lifestyle changes, including avoiding processed foods, eating slowly, adding probiotics to the diet, staying hydrated, exercising regularly, managing stress, and seeking medical attention if symptoms persist despite these modifications.
