St. Peter’s Senior Marty Anderson has qualified for the Class A Individual State Tournament in singles. In the final round of the section, Anderson defeated No. 2 seed Michael Frost in a three-set playoff match to become the top seed. Anderson beat Joe Hrunt 6-1,7-5 in the semifinals to advance to the final Thursday section, while Frost beat Jamie Johnson of the Blue Earth area 6-0 in the semi-final match. Hrunt defeated Johnson 6-0, 6-1 in the third-place play-off to win the bronze medal in Round 2.
The state individual singles will take place on Thursday, June 8 at 8:00 a.m. at the Reed Sweat Tennis Center in Minneapolis. Both players from the Blue Earth area finished in the top four and earned all-division honors.
In doubles, Litchfield’s Alex Draeger and Braden Olson defeated St. Peter’s Anders Dixon and Will Elias at the divisional doubles championship on Thursday at the Reedswet Tennis Center. Draeger and Olsson opened their semifinals with back-to-back 6-1 wins over Andrei Rivera and Brennan Kahn of St. James in St. Peter early Thursday. Dixon and Elias edged out Southwest Christians Garrett Lyles and Sean Johnson 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 in the semifinals to advance to the doubles final.
The Class A State Individual Doubles tournament begins on Thursday, June 8 at 10:00 am at the Reed Sweat Tennis Center. Rivera and Khan lost their third-place playoff game against Lyles and Johnson, preventing them from having another chance at a state qualifier.
