Two career skiers tragically died after falling from a mountain in northern Italy. The incident involved 27-year-old World Cup competitor Jean Daniel Pession and his girlfriend, 26-year-old skiing instructor Elisa Arlian. Pession was a member of the Italian national speed skiing team and fell from a spot near the summit of Monte Zerbion in the Alps. Recovery crews took several hours to find the pair, who were still linked together by a safety rope mountaineers use while climbing.
The circumstances surrounding the fall remain unclear, but both Pession and Arlian fell nearly 2,300 feet from the mountain. The Italian Winter Sports Federation expressed deep sorrow over the tragic mountain accident, noting Pession’s achievements in the World Cup competitions. They ranked 15th and 22nd in two separate events.
Officials with the federation and local government in Aosta Valley, where the mountain is located, publicly mourned the deaths and extended condolences to the families. President Flavio Roda and the entire Federation expressed their sympathy for the Pession family. The Regional Council of the Aosta Valley also acknowledged the deaths, describing it as a moment of profound sadness.
