A major development has shaken up the quarterback ranks in the 2025 class, as highly-ranked Rivals250 quarterback Ty Hawkins has flipped his commitment from TCU to SMU. Hawkins, who is ranked as the No. 159 overall prospect and No. 4 dual-threat quarterback in the 2025 cycle, had been committed to TCU since June of 2023.

Now a member of IMG Academy, Hawkins is now the star recruit for SMU’s 2025 class, which features five four-star prospects, four of whom are from Dallas. With Keelon Russell’s commitment to Alabama, SMU saw an opportunity to pursue their top target in Hawkins. The coaching staff’s plan for him resonated with Hawkins, leading to his decision to switch his commitment.

Hawkins explained that after his official visit to SMU, he felt that he had the best chance of playing early and succeeding in the ACC under coaches Deriq King and Rhett Lashlee. Ultimately, he trusted the coaching staff and believed that he would fit well in their offensive system.

The quarterback revealed that his decision to flip his commitment to SMU came after a few days of deliberation. Despite having positive experiences at both TCU and SMU, he ultimately felt that SMU was the better option for him moving forward.

During his time at San Antonio Johnson, Hawkins showcased his skills by throwing for 4,260 passing yards and 54 touchdowns, with only 12 interceptions. Additionally, he amassed 1,866 rushing yards and 24 touchdowns, solidifying his reputation as a talented dual-threat quarterback.
