The Socorro Independent School District’s Board of Trustees held a meeting to discuss budget decisions for the upcoming school year. Despite facing a multi-million dollar deficit, the board voted to adopt a zero percent salary increase and no retention payment for employees in the district for the 2024-2025 school year. This decision has led some employees to feel like they are taking a pay cut, as the district plans to save money by impacting benefits and compensation.

The board also voted for a $20 reduction in the district’s contribution per employee per month for their health care benefits. These measures were recommended by Texas Education Agency conservators who were appointed to help reduce the deficit. The board understands the importance of addressing the financial issues now to prevent further problems in the future.

Despite expecting the outcome, some employees like bus driver Tommy Hill were disappointed with the decision. Hill recognized the necessity of the situation but acknowledged that it was not an ideal outcome. The impact on employee compensation and benefits is a concerning issue for many within the district.

The finalized budget for the 2024-2025 school year is set to be adopted on June 19. The board is working to address the financial challenges and make necessary adjustments to ensure the district’s financial stability moving forward. Community members and employees are closely monitoring the situation as decisions are made to navigate the budget shortfall.
