Solidia Technologies acquires license for eco-friendly cement technology

Solidia Technologies, Inc. is a pioneer and leading company in the low carbon cement and concrete market. Recently, they entered into a technology licensing arrangement with CalPortland® Company, one of the largest building materials producers in the Western United States. This licensing agreement allows CalPortland to use certain patents that enable up to a 50% reduction in the carbon footprint of cement and concrete. The limited licenses will specifically enable CalPortland to use the Solidia technology in the Western US as they develop low carbon solutions. CalPortland has also purchased certain lab and plant assets from Solidia.

Russell Hill, CEO of Solidia, expressed his excitement about the new licensing program with CalPortland and emphasized CalPortland’s commitment to decarbonisation of the cement and concrete industries. Bill Mullen, CalPortland Chief Operating Officer, stated that their company continues to focus on decarbonisation opportunities and innovative carbon reduction strategies. The collaboration with Solidia will help them achieve their sustainability goals.

Solidia Cement is a unique low-limestone cement that gains strength through carbonation rather than hydration like traditional portland cement. It is made using the same raw materials and equipment as portland cement but achieves significant CO2 reductions due to lower production temperatures and reduced limestone calcination. This cement can be utilized in the manufacture of concrete products and supplemental cementitious materials.

Following the divestiture to CalPortland, Solidia plans to continue working with licensing partners to provide its low carbon solutions. They have over 300 patents and patent applications globally. Interested parties can register for free to access more information on World Cement’s website.
