Spain faces a potential fine of $32,000 if 16-year-old Lamine Yamal plays the entire match against Albania at Euro 2024 for violating labor laws in host country Germany. Despite Spain’s popularity in the tournament, the team’s possession of wing prodigy Yamal, who is only 16 years and 347 days old, has raised concerns about child protection laws in Germany. German regulations state that individuals under 18 years old are not allowed to work past 8 p.m. This law aims to prevent labor exploitation and ensure the safety and well-being of teenagers, regardless of their nationality.

In light of these laws, Spain’s football federation may breach child labor regulations if they allow Yamal to play the full 90 minutes against Albania on June 25. German authorities have informed La Roja about the potential financial penalty if they disregard these rules. The law acknowledges an exception for young athletes, extending the allowable working hours until 11 p.m. However, this exception includes time for post-game activities like showering and media obligations, making it likely for Yamal to exceed the regulations if he plays the entire match.

Additionally, if the match goes into extra time, commencing at 9 p.m., Yamal’s participation during the knockout rounds could lead to further penalties for Spain. As the youngest player at Euro 2024, Yamal’s talent and potential have been evident in Spain’s victories. His impact on the team, Barcelona, has positioned him as a key player and a promising talent for Spanish football. Despite his remarkable performance on the field, the team must navigate labor laws and regulations to ensure compliance and avoid potential fines.
