Spain Ranks Seventh Worldwide for Digital Skills in 2024 Coursera Global Report

The Global Skills Report 2024, released by online learning platform Coursera, ranks Spain as the seventh country in the world with the highest digital skills. Spain has seen the largest increase in enrollments in Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) in Europe to adapt to the current era of technological disruption. Spanish students are eager to acquire the skills necessary for GenAI and excel in technology and data science, according to the report based on data from millions of students and institutional partners worldwide.

Spain ranks seventh overall in Technology, with a focus on skills like Bioinformatics, Programming Languages, and Distributed Computing Architecture. The report suggests that Spain is on track to surpass the forecast of basic digital skills for the population by 2030. Coursera’s ranking also shows that Spain is ahead of countries like Italy, Denmark, and Belgium, demonstrating a strong commitment to digital skills development.

Spanish companies are investing in training their employees to leverage technology, with 85% already doing so. The report also highlights gender parity in online learning in Spain, with almost half of the students being women. As the workforce evolves, the need for digital skills becomes more critical, with two-thirds of jobs at risk of automation. Coursera’s report aims to provide practical insights for Spanish organizations, governments, and educational institutions to prepare for the future of work.

European students demonstrate a high level of skill mastery, with Switzerland and Germany leading the ranking. Despite a decline in cybersecurity enrollments, there has been a significant increase in GenAI course enrollments in Europe. The report emphasizes the importance of accessible learning pathways as the labor market continues to evolve rapidly. With a large percentage of workers needing retraining, flexible and accessible learning solutions are essential.

Since October 2021, over 2.3 million Spaniards have enrolled in Coursera courses. The platform continues to offer new skills to users through Machine Learning technology and translated courses. The report underscores the need to bridge the digital skills gap and adapt to the changing landscape of work to ensure a competitive workforce in the future.
