BD, a global medical technology company with a manufacturing facility in Sandy, Utah, is dedicated to producing and sterilizing IV catheters and other medical equipment to support healthcare professionals in administering medication and therapies across the U.S. and worldwide. For over 20 years, BD has been partnered with Rocky Mountain Power’s Wattsmart Business® program. This program assists companies like BD in finding ways to reduce energy usage through equipment upgrades and behavioral changes, while also offering incentives to help cover costs.

Eric Wells, the associate director of corporate facilities at BD Sandy, has shared that the Wattsmart Business program helped the company to think beyond simply replacing equipment with the same models. Instead, they were able to make replacements with a purpose in mind. In recent years, BD has implemented various energy-efficient upgrades. Experts from Cascade Energy, brought in by Rocky Mountain Power, helped BD identify opportunities to optimize their processes for efficiency.

One example of BD’s energy-efficient upgrades includes the replacement of old UV ovens with new, more efficient models that utilize LED technology to reduce energy consumption and heat output. This upgrade allowed BD to eliminate energy-consuming heat exhaust fans. As a result, BD received an incentive of over $55,000 and reduced their annual energy consumption by more than 545,000 kilowatt-hours, equivalent to charging over 25 million cell phones, according to the EPA Greenhouse Gas Calculator.

Overall, BD’s partnership with Rocky Mountain Power’s Wattsmart Business program has not only helped them to reduce their energy usage and costs but has also contributed to their commitment to sustainability and efficiency in their operations.
