The Wayne Curry Sports and Learning Center in Landover was recently targeted by ATM thieves. The thieves broke in and stole the center’s ATM machine sometime on Thursday night. As a result, the center was closed on Friday morning as the investigation into the theft began. Regular patrons of the center learned about the incident when they arrived for their usual activities.

The lack of permanent security guards at the center was noted by some patrons, expressing their lack of surprise at the theft. The center is an important community resource, with its fields and tracks being popular among seniors and those looking for exercise. Many visitors to the center were puzzled as to why the theft occurred, as the ATMs in the building are not always stocked with cash.

Despite security cameras capturing the incident, the ATM theft occurred nonetheless. Prince George’s County Police Chief Malik Aziz, along with Maryland Congressman Glenn Ivey, held a press conference addressing the issue of ATM thefts. The Safe Access to Cash Act has been proposed to allow the FBI to investigate these crimes, which are often committed by organized groups operating across state lines.

Aziz emphasized that ATM theft is a serious offense that poses risks to public safety and disrupts financial institutions. The bill proposes fines and up to 20 years in prison for those convicted of ATM theft. Maryland-National Capital Park Police are currently investigating the robbery at the Wayne Curry Sports and Learning Center.
