In Greensboro, N.C., an organization called Beyond Sports NC is seeking support from the community to ensure that all children in the Triad have equal access to sports equipment. The cost of sports equipment varies widely, ranging from $100 to $1,000. According to Mike Kennedy, the co-founder of Beyond Sports NC, the student poverty rate in Guilford County is 66.3%, making it challenging for many families to afford the necessary equipment for their children to participate in sports.
Beyond Sports NC is aiming to stock its warehouse with both new and used sports equipment, clothing, and shoes. They are specifically looking for items used in middle school or elementary school sports, such as soccer, basketball, football, and shoes. Kennedy highlighted the increasing costs of shoes, as children often outgrow them quickly, making it difficult for families to keep up with the expenses.
The rising costs of sports equipment, registration fees, camps, and travel can be a significant barrier for many families. For example, according to data collected by playgroundequipment.com, the average cost to play basketball is $427, while for lacrosse, it can reach up to $1,000. Beyond Sports NC is committed to accepting any sports gear in good condition or brand new to help alleviate the financial burden on families.
As the fall sports season approaches, Beyond Sports NC is particularly in need of soccer, field hockey, and football items to support children in Title I schools throughout the Triad. Donations from the community will go directly to these schools, ensuring that all children have the opportunity to participate in sports, regardless of their financial circumstances.
