Alpena High School’s men’s golf team tied for fourth place at the TC Central Trojan Invitational on Monday, with a season-low team score of 321. Gavin Hump led the team with an individual score of 69. Other Alpena scorers were Easton Schultz (79), Anden Marceau (84), Harrison Kazbowski (89), Avery Spicer (90), and Cameron Stevens (108). Alpena’s co-team also played, scoring 392 as a team. Preston Schult led Alpena with 86 points, while Bryce Moe (99), Carter Koproski (100), Luke Miller (107), Carter Green (115), and Gavin Winterstein (115) also contributed.
Alpena will compete in the Big North Conference Championship at Gaylord Golf Club on Wednesday. Turning to track and field, Alpena had a successful day at Monday’s Fairview 9/10 meet, with many competitors winning events. Ty Deaver won the men’s 100m with a time of 11.4, Thorin Rodgers won the 200m with a time of 23.8 seconds, and Quinn Kelly won the 400m with 52.0 points. Kenan Knight won the 3,200m with a time of 11:22.1, and the men’s 400 relay team of Rogers, Deaver, Cole Harman, and Carson Najimovic won with 47.0 points.
The Alpena women’s team was also successful. Kaelin Heath won the 400m (1:07.7), 1600m (5:53), and 3200m (13:36.5), and Melody Kaufman won the shot put with a distance of 32-4. Other winners were Keira Prue in discus throw, Roslyn Freese in pole vault, Natalie Machen in long jump, Hailey Glick in high jump, and Piper Whitefield in the 100 hurdles.
In baseball, the Hillman team swept Pelston, winning 5-0 and 7-5. Trenton Talatuta pitched a shutout in the first game, recording 14 strikeouts, while Xavier Nicolas scored two hits and two RBIs in the second game. In softball, the Hillman team shut out Pelston twice, winning 17-0 and 18-0. Nicole Barbeau threw a one-hit shutout in the first game, with Cassidy Bennack hitting 3-for-4 with two doubles and a grand slam. In the second game, Gretchen Weiland won with 12 strikeouts and Barbeau hit a triple with 3-for-5 at-bats.
