Starting Mainoo ‘will only go against Southgate’s natural tendencies’

The Telegraph’s chief football writer Sam Wallace believes that starting Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo for England would defy manager Gareth Southgate’s instincts. Mainoo, who is only 19 years old, came on as a substitute at half-time in England’s final group game against Slovenia. This was the second time Mainoo was brought on during Euro 2024, and his performance has led to calls for him to start the next match.

Despite playing only a half, Mainoo was instrumental in the game, coming in second to defender Marc Guehi for possession won and joint third for total duels alongside striker Harry Kane. Wallace explained that Southgate is naturally a cautious manager, which is why he tends to choose defensive midfielders like Conor Gallagher. However, Wallace believes that Mainoo, who is more of an attacking player, deserves a start based on his performance.

During an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast, Wallace stated that Mainoo is likely to be more of a number eight player in his career, indicating a more attacking style of play. Even though this goes against Southgate’s instincts, Wallace believes that Mainoo’s performance justifies giving him a starting position in the team.
