First-round draft picks are often expected to be Week 1 starters, especially in the trenches, but Pittsburgh Steelers rookie tackle Troy Fautanu may face competition from fourth-year veteran Dan Moore Jr. for a starting spot. Despite his talent, Fautanu is currently behind Moore on the depth chart, creating a challenging situation for him to earn a starting role. This does not mean Fautanu won’t succeed in the future, but he will need to make significant progress to secure a starting job.
It will be interesting to see where the Steelers decide to place Broderick Jones for reps during training camp, as both he and Moore have shown better performance on the left side. Last season, Jones filled in for Moore when he was sidelined with an injury, showing improvement as he gained more experience. With Jones now having more knowledge of the NFL system, the official depth chart may have him on the right side, leaving Fautanu to wait for his opportunity to shine.
The competition among the Steelers’ offensive linemen is something to keep an eye on as the season progresses. Fautanu’s development and ability to adjust to the NFL level will play a significant role in determining his role on the team. Despite facing stiff competition, Fautanu’s talent and intelligence may help him earn a starting role in the future.
