Manchester City defender John Stones is impressed with the partnership he has formed with Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi in defence for the England squad. After Harry Maguire was left out of the final squad, there were questions about who would partner Stones at centre-back. However, Guehi has seamlessly stepped into the role and received a lot of praise for his performances in the first two games of his first major tournament.
In an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live, Stones commended Guehi, saying he has been “so good” and has handled the different emotions and challenges of tournament football well. Stones emphasized the importance of partnerships in football, stating that he and Guehi support each other on the pitch.
Despite England’s lacklustre displays in their recent matches, Guehi has been a standout performer in Gareth Southgate’s side. Stones acknowledged the goal conceded against Denmark but praised Guehi for his performance and the way he has handled the pressure of the occasion.
Stones also highlighted the skills of Guehi’s Palace teammate, Adam Wharton, who is also part of England’s Euro 2024 squad. Stones was impressed with Wharton’s ability to excel in the basics of the game, such as using space effectively and exhibiting calmness on the ball.
