The Kaua‘i District Health Office (KDHO) is hosting an open house on Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. as part of National Public Health Week. The event will take place on Umi Street across the elections building, adjacent to the Central Pacific Bank building. This open house is an opportunity for the public to speak with Hawai‘i State Department of Health staff about programs and actions that community members can take to address public health challenges.

Dr. Janet Berreman, Kaua‘i District Health Officer, shared, “National Public Health Week invites the public to explore the many programs and services that the Department of Health offers to enhance the well-being of the community. KDHO staff is excited to welcome everyone at this event and express gratitude to our community and partners for their ongoing support in building a thriving and healthier Kaua‘i. Collaborating to understand and support public health benefits the community as a whole.”

Attendees at the open house will have the opportunity to learn about public health career and educational opportunities. The event will also include representatives from high schools, with a focus on health academies, senior citizen clubs, Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami, the Kaua‘i County Council, the governor’s liaison, and Kaua‘i’s legislative team. Department of Health professionals present will include vector control, administrative services, community health workers, public health nurses, epidemiologists, mental health professionals, food safety inspectors, disabilities case managers, and microbiologists.

National Public Health Week is observed during the first full week of April each year by the American Public Health Association. This week is dedicated to recognizing the importance of public health and highlighting critical issues that can improve the nation’s health. This year’s theme is “Protecting, Connecting, and Thriving: We Are All Public Health.”
