Strengthening Communities through the Integration of Science, Art, and Engagement

Editors’ Highlights are summaries of recent papers by AGU’s journal editors. Science has the potential to help communities identify emerging hazards that can impact their operations and overall well-being. This ranges from long-term effects of climate change like extreme weather events to more localized issues such as sinkholes, offering valuable insights and predictive capabilities. However, in order to translate this knowledge into meaningful action with lasting effects, it is crucial to establish a connection with the individuals who will be affected by these hazards and work together to address them.

The CREATE Resilience project, spearheaded by the non-profit Nurture Nature Center in Easton, Pennsylvania, serves as a prime example of how this can be accomplished. Highlighted in the study by Semmens et al. [2023], the project featured an innovative approach that involved engaging with members of the community across different age groups, creating public murals, and providing information through a dedicated booklet for the community. By implementing these creative initiatives, projects like CREATE Resilience can pave the way for building community resilience, emphasizing the importance of long-term preparedness measures that extend beyond short-term interventions.
