Student earns multiple honors at local science competition

A freshman from Fayetteville-Manlius recently received multiple awards at a regional science fair for his project titled “Cancer Prediction Through Modeling: Understanding Environmental and Heritable Factors.” Yusuf Ay has always been intrigued by the intersection of math, computer science, and biology, particularly in understanding why some people are more prone to illnesses than others. Two teachers at F-M played a significant role in inspiring Yusuf to explore this project further. His biology teacher, Mrs. Reichel, piqued his interest in genetics and its impact on health, while his computer science teacher, Mr. Phan, encouraged him to pursue additional projects outside of class.

Yusuf utilized the computer programming skills he learned from Mr. Phan’s class to delve into complex biology concepts related to cancer development. His project focused on analyzing breast, skin, and lung cancer using mathematical modeling and computer programming to study how genetic mutations and environmental factors influence cancer susceptibility. Yusuf aspires for his project to inspire other students and showcase the district’s commitment to STEM education.

Following the completion of his research, Yusuf participated in the 44th Central New York Science and Engineering Fair at Syracuse’s Museum of Science & Technology (MOST) on April 7, 2024. At the event, Yusuf garnered various accolades, including the Regeneron Biomedical Science Award, IEEE Awards in Electrical and Computer Engineering, the Le Moyne Excellence in Mathematics & Computer Science Award, and a Senior Division Honors medal. His project on cancer prediction through modeling has garnered recognition and praise within the scientific community.
