Student from SOSE Chosen for Marine Technology Program Spanning One Year

Hafeez Oladejo, a student at the University of Southern Mississippi (USM) School of Ocean Science and Engineering (SOSE), has been chosen to take part in the Marine Technology Society (MTS) 2024-2025 EMERGE Program, a prestigious career opportunity that supports emerging leaders in marine technology. This year-long program features virtual meetings, mentorship, and networking opportunities with professionals in the marine technology field. Oladejo will also attend the Oceans 2024 Conference in Halifax, Canada as part of the program.

Oladejo’s objective is to interact with scientists and gain valuable experiences throughout the program. He believes that his acceptance into the program will motivate him further in his research efforts and contributions to ocean science. According to Oladejo, being selected for this opportunity reflects the high-quality education and research conducted at the USM School of Ocean Science and Engineering. He feels that this recognition not only demonstrates the exceptional work of students but also enhances the school’s reputation as a leader in marine science and technology.

With the guidance of his lead SOSE faculty member, Dr. Diana Bernstein, Oladejo plans to advance his research efforts in coastal processes observation and modelling. Dr. Bernstein highlights the selectivity of the EMERGE Program, noting that only 14 participants were accepted in 2023. She emphasizes that one of the program’s key features is sponsoring participants to attend and participate in the OCEANS conference, providing valuable opportunities to connect with industry leaders, researchers, and peers.
