A major operation took place at a secondary school in Idar-Oberstein where at least 15 children were poisoned by the laburnum plant. The students, aged between 10 and 15, had apparently swallowed seeds of the poisonous plant, causing them to suffer mainly from nausea. They were taken to the hospital on Thursday afternoon with symptoms of poisoning, as reported by Südwestrundfunk (SWR). According to the spokesperson of Idar-Oberstein Hospital in Rheinland-Pfalz, the children either had the seeds of the poisonous plant in their mouths or had swallowed them, but how this occurred is still unclear.
All affected pupils were initially monitored in the intensive care unit, but fortunately, there is no acute danger to their lives, according to the spokesperson. They were given charcoal to bind the poison, which would then be excreted through the intestines. By the evening, six of the students were able to be transferred back to the normal ward.
