Three students from Alachua County Public Schools recently participated in the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair in Los Angeles. Nathan Wei, a student at Buchholz High School, placed second in the Chemistry Division. Wei’s research project focused on the development of a strong, recyclable plastic made from renewable resources. Prior to this, Wei was named a finalist in the 2024 Regeneron Science Talent Search and placed fourth in the Regeneron STS finals in March. His goal was to qualify for the International Science and Engineering Fair, which he successfully achieved.

In addition to Wei, another student from Buchholz High School, Sophia Rong, also competed in the international fair. Rong won first place in the Senior Mathematics and Computational Science Division at the State Science and Engineering Fair. Her project focused on HIV transmission and earned her a special award in her division. She was named a Grand Award Winner as well.

Abhith Kasala, a student from Gainesville High School, received a third place award in the Earth and Environmental Science category at the international competition. Kasala’s research on the impact of microplastics and other contaminants in water earned him a spot in ISEF earlier this year. He also won first place in the Senior Earth and Environmental Science Division at the state level and received two special prizes for his project.
