Suez Canal Economic Zone secures four projects for producing eco-friendly ammonia

The General Authority of the Suez Canal Economic Zone has announced the signing of four projects to produce green ammonia within the integrated Sokhna and East Port Said regions affiliated with the authority. These projects have total investments amounting to 31.4 billion euros and an annual production volume estimated at about 6.241 million tons.

The signing of the four agreements took place in the presence of Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, the Prime Minister, and a number of ministers on the second day of the Egyptian-European Investment Conference concluding its work in Cairo. Walid Gamal El-Din, Chairman of the General Authority for the Suez Canal Economic Zone, Dr. Mohamed El-Khayat, CEO of the New and Renewable Energy Authority, and Ayman Soliman, CEO of the Egyptian Sovereign Fund, were the signatories.

The first agreement involves an alliance of several companies to develop and operate a green ammonia production facility in the integrated Sokhna area. It will be done in two phases with total investments of 13.5 billion euros and an annual production capacity of 330 thousand tons of green ammonia. Commercial operations are set to begin by the fourth quarter of 2030, with the annual production capacity in the first phase estimated at about 2.5 million tons.

The second agreement, signed with Oqure Energy Holding Company, involves the development and operation of a green ammonia production facility in the integrated zone in Sokhna. This project also includes two phases with investments totaling 3.9 billion euros and an annual production capacity in the pilot phase of 100,000 tons. Commercial operations for this project are expected to start in the fourth quarter of 2029, with an annual production capacity of about 900,000 tons in the first phase expected for the fourth quarter of 2031.

The third agreement, signed with the alliance of “Taqa Arabia” and “Voltalia,” is worth 3.8 billion euros and aims to produce green ammonia in the Sokhna area in two phases. The commercial operations for this project are set to begin by the fourth quarter of 2030, with the annual production capacity in the first phase reaching approximately 355.7 thousand tons. Commercial operations are expected to start by the fourth quarter of 2032.

Finally, the fourth agreement includes an investment of 10.2 billion euros by DAI Infrastructure to establish a green ammonia production project in the East Port Said Integrated Zone. This project is projected to have an annual production capacity of 1.7 million tons with commercial operations scheduled to begin by the second quarter of 2028.

Walid Gamal El-Din emphasized that the Suez Canal Economic Zone has been making significant progress in localizing the green fuel industry and its complementary and feeding industries. This involves production, storage, trading, or ship supply. The economic zone is strategically cooperating with state institutions, major alliances, and international companies in the green energy sector to meet the strategic vision of becoming a global center for green fuel production and to fulfill the needs of the local and global markets for renewable energy-related products and services. Additionally, he met with the Dutch Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs for Economic Affairs during the Egyptian-European Investment Conference to discuss cooperation between the economic zone and Dutch companies in the field of green fuel.
