Supervisor Introduces Legislation to Safeguard LGBTQ+ Health Center in the Castro District

Queer LifeSpace (QLS), an LGBTQ+ mental healthcare facility based in San Francisco’s Castro neighborhood, faced eviction threats recently but may now have a second chance. San Francisco Board of Supervisors President Aaron Peskin’s office announced that legislation is being introduced to protect the essential health services provided by QLS. This legislation would prevent any non-health or social services from taking over the property without Planning Commission approval.

The Castro neighborhood has been a significant hub for the LGBTQ+ community, especially during pride month celebrations. QLS has been operating in the neighborhood for the past 13 years, offering mental health and substance abuse services to marginalized communities across the Bay Area. The services are provided on a sliding scale for patients, and the center also offers training for therapists looking to enhance their LGBTQ+ competency.

Ryan MacCarrigan, Executive Director of Queer LifeSpace, emphasized the importance of having culturally-competent and affordable healthcare services in a safe space, especially during challenging times like the pandemic and the rise of extremist right-wing groups. Peskin echoed these sentiments by describing QLS as a “safe space in uncertain times.” He emphasized the need for landlords to support long-term small businesses that contribute to community value, job creation, service provision, and neighborhood stability.

In a recent development, the SF Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to designate San Francisco as a sanctuary city for transgender, gender non-conforming, intersex, and Two Spirit individuals. This move highlights the city’s commitment to supporting and protecting LGBTQ+ communities in the face of various challenges and threats.
