Supporting individuals affected by obesity and sleep apnea

Researchers at the University of California San Diego have found that a drug used to treat type 2 diabetes, tirzepatide, may also help people with sleep apnea by reducing the number of breathing interruptions during sleep. However, more testing is required to fully understand the long-term effects of taking the drug.

A study conducted at Washington University has discovered a potential link between cannabis use and an increased risk of serious illness for individuals with COVID-19. The research found that COVID patients who had used cannabis in the past year were 80 percent more likely to be hospitalized and 27 percent more likely to be admitted to the Intensive Care Unit compared to those who had not used cannabis.

On a positive note, new research from the Cleveland Clinic has shown that bariatric surgery performed on obese individuals can significantly reduce the risk of major cardiovascular issues and sleep apnea. The Obesity Medicine Association reports that approximately 70 percent of adult patients with obstructive sleep apnea also have obesity.

Overall, these studies highlight the importance of further research into the potential benefits and risks associated with certain medications and lifestyle choices for individuals with various health conditions.
