Suspected mushroom poisoning leads to deaths of two infants after dinner

Two children, aged 9 and 11, died after experiencing headaches, stomachaches, and vomiting blood a few hours after consuming mushroom soup, squash, and white rice for dinner. Five other individuals were hospitalized as a result. On June 7, the Lai Chau Department of Health reported that five people were being monitored for symptoms of mushroom poisoning, such as headache, dizziness, and vomiting.

It was discovered that seven people from Phin Kho village, Muong Te district, had picked mushrooms from the fields on May 31 and cooked them into soup for dinner. Following the meal, the two children showed severe symptoms, with one of them vomiting blood and passing away on June 1, followed by the other child’s death two days later. The remaining four children experienced minor symptoms before being taken to the hospital for treatment.

The family did not report the deaths to authorities but proceeded to bury the children themselves. The remaining five individuals were hospitalized and in stable condition. The Department of Health of Lai Chau advised against consuming wild or naturally grown mushrooms unless their toxicity is known. They also warned against picking and consuming young or old mushrooms, as they can be poisonous and lead to serious health issues.

Mushroom poisoning can have severe consequences, including liver and kidney failure or even death. Prompt emergency treatment is crucial in such cases to avoid long-term health problems. It is important to be cautious and aware of the risks associated with consuming wild mushrooms in order to prevent tragic incidents like this one from occurring.
