SVL Athletics Competition: Davison Men and Grand Blanc Women Claim Second Place

The Saginaw Valley League athletics competition took place on Tuesday, resulting in the Flint-Grand Blanc women finishing second and Davison finishing second in the men’s competition. Midland Dow won the women’s event with 137 points, while Grand Blanc scored 97 points. Carman Ainsworth came fifth with 59.5, Davison came sixth with 59, Powers Catholic finished ninth with 35, and Lapeer finished at twelfth with nine. Carman Ainsworth’s Naima Chinkyphat won the 100 hurdles, and Cavaliers’ Jam Thigpen’s team won. Layne Richmond, Tori Hopkins, and Sierra Robinson won the 1,600 relay, while Davison’s Elizabeth Rainwater won the pole vault.

In the men’s event, Saginaw Heritage took first place with 122.5 points, with Davison scoring 87 points and Grand Blanc fifth with 76.32 points. Lapeer followed sixth with 70.16, Powers seventh with 63, and Carman Ainsworth ninth with 20. Grand Blanc’s Jackson Webber won with 100 points, Davison’s Javion Johnson won with 200 points, Davison’s Ian Forrest won the 3,200m, and Grand Blanc’s DeAndre Westfall-Berger with 110 hurdles. Davison’s 400m relay team of Buddy Banks-Williams, Logan Honeycutt, Henry Carsterfen, and Braylen Naves took first place while Grandblanc’s 800 relay team consisting of Jaylen Brown, Joe Nemechek, Westfall Berger, and Jerell Clement took first place. Rapier Hayden Joseph won the high jump, Davison’s Seth Hopkins won the pole vault, and Grand Blanc’s 1,600-man relay team consisting of Ethan Pinkston, Westfall Berger, Nolan Gilmore, and Carter Wolf took first place.

New Lothrop Women finished as runners-up in the Mid-Michigan Athletic Conference tournament, while the men’s team finished second. Durand finished first, while Durand’s Taylor Carlson won the 100, 200, and long jump. In the men’s event, Chesaning finished on top, and New Lothrop’s Cole Yaros won with 3,200.

Durand won the Mid-Michigan Activities Conference Golf Tournament and finished first in the overall standings, hitting 388 at The Emerald in St. John’s. Byron came third with 395 points, Montrose finished sixth with 422, and Mount Morris was seventh with 533. Durand’s Connor Hovis tied for second with 90 points, while Byron’s Braylen Brown and New Lothrop’s Cole Noonan tied for second with 94 points. Durand’s Braden Kelly won the tournament to add to his titles in football and basketball.

In baseball, starting pitcher Luis Frontero allowed five hits and eight strikeouts, and Matt Sierrakowski provided 6.2 runs in the end. Lapier lost 5-4 despite Sheracowski’s four hits, while Owosso managed a split with Holly.

Wurts Creek, with a 5-1 victory, beat Owosso, with Olivia Savage scoring the lone goal for the latter. More information is available to vote for Flint Area Athlete of the Week.
