Tebas deems goal-line technology unaffordable, considers playing La Liga matches overseas

In an interview with Expansion, Javier Tebas, the president of La Liga, discussed the league’s future plans, including the possibility of official matches being played abroad and the use of goal-line technology. Tebas expressed his thoughts for expanding La Liga’s global footprint, stating that he believes official matches will be played abroad in the 2025-26 season. He emphasized the importance of tapping into international markets, particularly North America, to solidify La Liga’s position as one of the world’s premier football leagues.

Tebas acknowledged the challenges posed by competing leagues and the need for innovation. He stated that other very competitive leagues are emerging, so La Liga cannot continue to do the same things and expect to remain at the top. He emphasized the need for adaptation and evolution to stay ahead in the football industry.

Regarding goal-line technology, Tebas addressed concerns about its effectiveness and cost. He explained that goal-line technology is not perfect, which is why La Liga has not adopted it yet. Tebas proposed increasing the use of cameras to assist referees, as a more cost-effective approach to improving officiating standards. He believes that implementing more cameras would be more beneficial than investing in goal-line technology that may not be foolproof.
