Telehealth Company Seeking to Bridge Mental Health Provider Gap

In February 2021, more than 36 percent of Vermont adults reported symptoms of anxiety or depression according to the National Alliance of Mental Health. However, there is a shortage of mental health practitioners in the state. To address this issue, a new telehealth company called Telemedicine Essentials of America is aiming to fill these gaps and improve accessibility to mental health care.

Tiney Ray, the founder of the company, stated that people are often forced to wait three to eight months for an initial appointment, which can be detrimental in a mental health crisis. Ray, a former nurse practitioner in Vermont, is leading efforts to enhance mental health care accessibility throughout the state through telehealth services. The goal is to provide support to individuals who are struggling and minimize their need to utilize emergency rooms.

One of the challenges in rural states like Vermont is the long distances people must travel for medical appointments. Telehealth services allow individuals to receive care from their homes, eliminating the need for travel and making appointments more accessible. This approach has the potential to revolutionize mental health care in Vermont and improve treatment outcomes.

Telehealth is not intended to replace in-person treatment but to complement existing services and fill gaps in care. The focus is on collaboration to ensure that patients receive comprehensive support and resources. The company also plans to introduce a mobile van to bring nurses directly to patients, making it easier for community members to access care where they are.
