Telemach’s 5G Highway Project: Making Roads Safer, Faster, and Future-Ready

The highways of the future are expected to see an increase in smarter vehicles that can communicate with each other, as well as the introduction of self-driving cars. This will bring new challenges that require faster, more stable, and safer communication systems. To meet these demands, the development of highways with a robust 5G network infrastructure is necessary. This infrastructure must support high data transmission capacity, low latency, and high reliability, especially in situations such as traffic accidents.

The 5G Adria project was launched to address these needs. The consortium consists of Telemach Slovenia and Croatia, DARS, the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the University of Ljubljana, and the Croatian company OIV. Together, they are conducting a study to explore the establishment of 5G infrastructure to enhance mobility and connectivity in Slovenia and Croatia. The research, funded in part by the European Union, is expected to be completed by the end of June.

The study focuses on analyzing the current network capacities and infrastructure to support the Mediterranean road corridor. The goal is to improve traffic management and establish the necessary connectivity for the future. The findings of the study will provide insights into the implementation costs of these solutions per kilometer of highway, with results expected in the fall.

The project aims to create a high-capacity network for next-generation applications, ensuring efficiency, safety, and communication for autonomous vehicles. Additionally, the study highlights the potential for reducing CO2 emissions and promoting sustainable development through improved transport infrastructure. Collaboration between partners in Slovenia and Croatia is key to the success of the project, laying the foundation for future digital technology and infrastructure projects in the region.
