Tesla has introduced a significant update to improve the Phone Key feature for iPhone users by utilizing Ultra Wideband (UWB) technology. This update is part of Tesla’s latest software version, 2024.2.3, which allows vehicles and iPhones to communicate with unprecedented accuracy. The enhancement enables more responsive locking, unlocking, and automatic door operations.
To take advantage of this improvement, Tesla users are advised to upgrade their Phone Key through the Tesla app. This involves switching from Bluetooth to UWB connectivity and requires an iPhone 11 or later model with UWB capabilities, as well as the latest Tesla app version 4.29.5 or higher.
The deployment of this feature is currently limited to the latest Model 3, 2023 Model X, and the Cybertruck, all of which are equipped with the necessary UWB technology. Refreshed Model S and Model X vehicles have UWB frequencies in their certificates of conformity, but they do not yet have access to the upgraded Phone Key feature. Furthermore, this update is only beneficial to iPhone users, as some Android devices with UWB are not supported.
This update demonstrates Tesla’s commitment to leveraging advanced technology to enhance user experience, especially for the significant number of iPhone users among Tesla owners. Although it does not integrate Apple’s Car Key feature in Apple Wallet, the update still represents a notable improvement in convenience and security for vehicle access.
Tesla’s adoption of UWB for the Phone Key feature highlights the potential for further collaborations between automotive and smartphone technologies to enhance functionality and user experiences.
