Testing Ericsson’s 5G Cloud RAN Technology with Rogers in Canada.

Rogers Communications and its network partner Ericsson successfully trialed 5G Cloud-Radio Access Network (Cloud RAN) technology at a nearly sold-out Toronto Blue Jays game on Canada Day. This was the first time this cutting-edge technology had been deployed over a commercial network at a live event in Canada. The implementation of Cloud RAN technology is pivotal as Rogers moves towards the next generation of networks, building on its national standalone 5G core network launched in 2021.

Cloud native technology will enable Rogers to better respond to wireless market demands, create a foundation for 5G advancements, enhance network reliability and energy efficiency, and improve network resiliency. This trial deployment is part of Rogers’ commitment to providing Canadians with top-notch networks and global technology. Through national network investments, Rogers has become Canada’s largest and most reliable 5G network, covering over 2,300 communities. In 2023, the company was recognized for the fifth consecutive year as having the best wireless network in Canada by umlaut, a leading independent network benchmarking firm. The test of Cloud RAN technology is the latest in a series of 5G wireless innovations for Canadians, including the successful testing of 5G network slicing technology earlier this year.

Ron McKenzie, Chief Technology and Information Officer at Rogers, highlighted the importance of Cloud-native technology in the next generation of wireless networks. He expressed pride in completing Canada’s first deployment of 5G Cloud RAN technology at a major live event, emphasizing the company’s ongoing investment in its coast-to-coast radio access network and innovative technologies to deliver reliable services nationwide to both consumers and enterprise customers.
