The ‘Bridgerton’ Series Boosts U.K. Economy by Over £250 Million

Netflix’s hit show “Bridgerton” has had a significant impact beyond just viewership numbers. According to Netflix, the Shonda Rhimes-produced universe, which includes Seasons 1-3 and the spinoff “Queen Charlotte,” has added over a quarter of a billion pounds to the U.K. economy since its launch in December 2020. This boost has benefitted nearly 5,000 local businesses in the process.

To celebrate this milestone, Shonda Rhimes will be opening markets for trading at the London Stock Exchange. The announcement comes after the second part of Season 3, which focuses on the romance between Penelope Featherington and Colin Bridgerton, was released on the streaming platform.

Rhimes acknowledged the significant impact of the “Bridgerton” universe on both culture and the economy in a statement. She emphasized that the show has influenced conversations, trends, and even baby names and weddings. Rhimes expressed pride in the show’s ability to make a significant economic contribution to local communities.

Moreover, “Bridgerton” has not only boosted viewership but also visitation to the areas where it is set, such as Bath and Bristol. The show has led to notable increases in baby names inspired by its characters, with Daphne, Eloise, and Colin seeing significant upticks in popularity since the premiere.

Julia Hoggett, CEO of the London Stock Exchange, highlighted the importance of the film and creative industries in the U.K. economy. She emphasized their role in creating jobs, driving innovation, and building communities. Hoggett expressed excitement about celebrating the economic and cultural impact of the work being done in these industries, such as the success of “Bridgerton.”
