As we approach the start of the 2024 NFL season and the Arizona Cardinals’ Week 1 opener, the team will be facing the Buffalo Bills at Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park in 89 days. The number 89 jersey now belongs to second-year tight end Blake Whiteheart, who is looking to make a name for himself after spending time on the practice squad and active roster last season as a rookie free agent signing.

Even though Whiteheart has yet to make a significant impact in the NFL, he is hoping to secure a spot on the team, possibly as the fourth tight end. Historically, the number 89 jersey has often been given to players who are on the back end of the roster, with the last player to wear it and make a reasonable impact being tight end Ben Patrick from 2007-2010.

Patrick, a seventh-round pick by the Cardinals, played in 42 games with 20 starts over four seasons. He recorded 45 career receptions, with a notable performance in the postseason where he caught five passes in six games, including a touchdown reception in the Super Bowl. While Patrick may not have been the best player to wear the number 89 jersey for the Cardinals, he did leave a lasting impact during his time with the team.
