The center-left speeds up coalition and referendum against Meloni reforms

The Democratic Party secretary, Elly Schlein, made phone calls to Sara Funaro, Vito Leccese, and Vittoria Ferdinandi to congratulate them on their victories in Florence, Bari, and Perugia. Schlein expressed that the victories were historic for the Democratic Party and the progressive camp, winning in all six regional capitals and gaining three new mayors. The opposition lost in Rovigo and Lecce but gained encouragement to move forward with unity and reject the reforms of the Meloni government.

The centre-left also secured wins in Cremona and six other Lombardy municipalities, with Perugia being a particular point of satisfaction for the opposition. The hope is that the pattern seen in Perugia can be replicated in the upcoming Umbrian elections. The progressive pole aims to keep the Democratic Party, AVS, and the 5 Star Movement together, despite some lingering distrust between the parties.

The victories in the South are seen as a rejection of autonomy and a signal against the Meloni government’s reforms. The opposition is encouraged to continue working towards unity while respecting diversity and different identities. The focus is on building an alternative to the current government, with signs of encouragement coming from the local elections.

Efforts are being made to collect signatures for a referendum on autonomy and the premiership, with the opposition determined to focus on the regions as well. Matteo Renzi announced plans for a seminar on these topics and the possibility of holding a referendum in 2025. The opposition is determined to continue the fight against the current government’s reforms and advocate for a united Italy.
