A new eye health science museum has recently opened in the city, offering educational opportunities for individuals of all ages. This museum features interactive projects aimed at promoting health education in a fun and easily understandable way. Visitors can explore specially designed exhibits, models, multimedia projects, and simulation items like blind walking tracks to learn about the structure of eyes, the causes of eye diseases, and experience how scenes appear to people with different eye disorders or the challenges faced by blind individuals.

The Ai’er Eye Health Science Museum has been recognized by the Shanghai Children’s Foundation as a youth education base in the city. The foundation plans to organize online and offline educational programs to teach students and their families about proper eye protection, as well as prevention and control of myopia. Starting this summer, a series of educational events will be launched, inviting schools to visit the eye museum for health education sessions. Officials from the foundation and Shanghai Ai’er Eye Hospital, the museum’s founder, have emphasized the importance of eye disease prevention in China. They note that over 70 million Chinese children suffer from severe myopia, while about 80 percent of individuals over 60 have cataracts. Additionally, diabetic retinopathy, a diabetes-related eye complication, affects up to 37% of the 130 million Chinese diagnosed with diabetes.

Despite these alarming statistics, experts highlight the unequal distribution of eye health medical resources in China and the need for improved public awareness on the issue. The eye museum aims to address these gaps by providing a platform for education and awareness. Located at 2F, No. 83 Wuzhong Road, Xuhui District, the museum is open from 9am to 4:30pm, Tuesday to Sunday.
