The Guardian reports that factors such as low rent, free education, and a vibrant nightlife are to thank for Lithuania’s high happiness ranking in the World Happiness Report. The report ranks countries based on a happiness measurement survey conducted by Gallup, and Lithuania was ranked 19th overall but secured the top spot in the under-30 rankings. Young Lithuanians rated themselves 7.76 out of 10 on the happiness scale, significantly higher than their counterparts in the US who rated themselves 6.392 out of 10.

One reason for the happiness of young Lithuanians is that university education is free for a large portion of the population. Students like 23-year-old Gantas Bendikas will graduate with no debt, unlike their peers in the US where the average student debt is about $39,000. Additionally, rents in Lithuania are low, making it one of the cheapest places in Europe to rent. This affordability extends to renting studio spaces, with costs ranging from $109 to $544 a month in some cases.

These low costs in Lithuania allow artists to thrive, providing opportunities for them to pursue their passions without financial constraints. This contrasts with the challenges faced by artists in the US, where expensive housing and studio spaces can make it difficult to pursue a career in the arts. Beyond economic opportunities, Lithuania also offers a vibrant nightlife, with residents like 21-year-old Daniil Švager rating it as one of the best in Europe.

Overall, Lithuania’s appeal to young people is attributed to its affordable living costs, free education, ample career opportunities, and vibrant culture. These factors contribute to a high quality of life for young Lithuanians and contribute to their overall happiness levels.
