The hidden truth of addiction: Energy drinks on the frontlines in Ukraine

The death of a soldier has brought attention to what seems to be the “addiction” of Ukrainian soldiers on the battlefronts to energy drinks in the hope of boosting their courage and alertness. An American newspaper, The New York Times, reported that a deceased soldier was found in a bathroom with an energy drink named “Folia” in his hand. Despite suffering from heart disease, he would consume the energy drink for long periods.

According to some soldiers, they start their day with an energy drink, continue drinking it during patrols, and even before an attack. Energy drinks have become a vital source of strength and stamina, especially when soldiers have to endure long treks carrying heavy gear and facing extreme conditions. It has become a popular gift among soldiers, with cans seen everywhere on the battlefronts, even surpassing the importance of bread.

The consumption of energy drinks is not just limited to soldiers on the frontlines. The civilian population, facing constant missile attacks, stress, and sleep deprivation, has also turned to these drinks for a boost of energy. Sales of energy drinks in Ukraine have significantly increased since the start of the war, indicating a growing demand for energy sources amidst a challenging environment.

Energy drinks contain high levels of caffeine and other additives like taurine, vitamin B12, and guarana extract, all aimed at enhancing energy levels. However, there are concerns about the health risks associated with excessive caffeine consumption, including trembling hands, high blood pressure, and stomach issues. A study conducted on American soldiers revealed a link between high energy drink usage and mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and aggression, highlighting the ironic consequences of relying on these drinks when feeling fatigued.
