Mark Ruffalo, the longtime actor who plays the Hulk, has confirmed that he will be returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Bruce Banner in the upcoming film Captain America: Brave New World. This news was shared during a discussion at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, where Ruffalo mentioned that he will be reprising his role as the big green superhero. He expressed his excitement for the project, simply stating that “it’s going to be great.”
Details about the fourth mainline Captain America film are currently limited, but it has been confirmed that some major characters will be making appearances. Captain America himself, played by Anthony Mackie, will feature prominently, as well as Thaddeus Ross, now played by Harrison Ford after the passing of William Hurt in 2022.
Thaddeus Ross, a significant character in the Marvel universe, has a long history with Bruce Banner and is known to eventually transform into the Red Hulk in some storylines. With Ruffalo’s return as the Hulk, it’s possible that this connection could lead to the introduction of the Red Hulk.
After taking a break from the Marvel Cinematic Universe for a few years, Ruffalo has been working on non-superhero films, such as I Know This Much Is True, The Adam Project, and Poor Things. However, he has also made sporadic appearances in MCU-related projects like She-Hulk and What If…? His last Marvel film role, aside from a brief Shang-Chi cameo, was in Avengers: Endgame in 2019.
Captain America: Brave New World is set to hit theaters on February 14, 2025, and Marvel has also released the first trailer for Deadpool and Wolverine. Fans will have to wait for more information about how this film will fit into the broader MCU narrative.
