The massive Antarctic expedition vehicle experienced a significant setback

The Antarctic Snow Car (ASC) was a vehicle developed under the direction of Rear Admiral Richard Byrd and Dr. Thomas Poulter during the American Antarctic Service expedition from 1939 to 1941. Poulter returned from a previous Antarctic expedition with the idea of a giant transport vehicle to explore the land. Built with the intention of promoting shipping, the ASC was designed to travel long distances over ice and snow in harsh weather conditions.

The ASC was funded by the Research Foundation of the Armor Institute of Technology with an estimated amount of $150,000. Construction began in August 1939 and lasted 11 weeks. The vehicle was 17 meters long, 4.6 meters wide, and weighed around 20 tons, with living quarters for 4-5 people, a science laboratory, engine room, and other facilities. It had retractable wheels and large tires designed for difficult terrain and extreme cold conditions.

The ASC embarked on its journey to Antarctica in November 1939 but encountered problems upon arrival. Despite efforts to modify the vehicle, including adding spare tires and chains, it was unable to move forward in the snow and ice. The expedition resorted to driving the ASC in reverse, achieving a maximum distance of 148 km. Ultimately, the vehicle was abandoned in Antarctica in December 1940.

Despite its failure, the ASC provided a solid base for living and working in harsh Antarctic conditions. Scientists conducted experiments and research while living in the vehicle, which was equipped with heating systems and other amenities. Efforts to retrieve the ASC in later expeditions were unsuccessful, and its current whereabouts remain unknown.
