The new Egyptian Foreign Minister makes a statement on the Gaza conflict

Egypt’s new Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Aati made comments on the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip during a phone call with the UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Tor Wennesland. Abdel Aati stated that Cairo is working towards reaching a deal that would involve a ceasefire and the exchange of hostages and prisoners between Israel and Hamas. These remarks were the minister’s first on the Gaza conflict after the new government was inaugurated on Wednesday.

During the call, Abdel Aati raised concerns about the unilateral measures taken by Israel in the West Bank. He criticized the continuous expansion of settlements, increasing arrest operations, and systematic raids on Palestinian communities. Abdel Aati called for pressure on Israel to halt the conflict and adhere to resolutions from the Security Council and the International Court of Justice. He also highlighted the need for the resumption of operations at the Rafah crossing, which depends on Israeli willingness to withdraw and allow the Palestinian Authority to manage it.

Abdel Aati emphasized the importance of opening more Israeli crossings with Gaza to fulfill obligations as the occupying power. He stressed the urgency of an immediate ceasefire, compliance with international resolutions, and respect for international humanitarian and legal standards. Additionally, he urged continued international efforts to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza residents amidst the ongoing conflict.
