In the world of artificial intelligence, there exists a gray area where millions of humans work in secrecy. These individuals are often hired to train algorithms, but end up taking on much of the work themselves. This group of crucial workers came into the spotlight recently when The Information revealed that Amazon’s Just Walk Out technology, which allows customers to grab grocery items and leave the store without checking out, relied on over 1,000 individuals in India. These workers watched and labeled videos to ensure the accuracy of the checkouts.

Amazon promotes Just Walk Out as using computer vision, sensor fusion, and deep learning on its website, but fails to mention the involvement of contractors. When questioned by Gizmodo, Amazon explained that the workers were annotating videos to help improve the technology, and that they only validated a “small minority” of shopping visits when the AI was unable to determine a purchase.

This revelation sheds light on the hidden workforce behind many AI technologies. While machines are touted as the main driving force behind advancements in AI, it is ultimately humans who are responsible for much of the behind-the-scenes work. These workers play a crucial role in training algorithms and ensuring the accuracy and efficiency of AI systems.

As the field of artificial intelligence continues to expand and evolve, it is important to recognize and acknowledge the contributions of these individuals who work tirelessly behind the scenes. Their efforts are essential in pushing the boundaries of technology and driving innovation in the world of AI.
