Boeing’s CST-100 Starliner spacecraft, carrying two NASA astronauts, was set to return to Earth on Friday following its launch on June 5 from Florida. This mission is crucial for NASA to certify the Starliner for regular flights. However, uncertainties regarding repairs to malfunctioning components, weather conditions, and ISS scheduling have caused NASA officials in Houston to consider various contingencies for the spacecraft’s return.
Currently, mission officials are aiming for the Starliner to return on June 18. The spacecraft is expected to land at either the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico, Willcox Playa in Arizona, or a similar location based on weather conditions. However, updates on the return date may be provided as the mission progresses.
On Tuesday, NASA Deputy Program Manager for the ISS, Dina Contella, revealed a new issue with a valve on the Starliner. Additionally, a NASA blog mentioned helium leaks from the spacecraft’s propulsion system, on top of the four already detected during its journey to the space station. Despite facing challenges, NASA and Boeing managed to address issues such as the failure of five maneuvering thrusters, repairing four before docking at the ISS.
The Starliner has the capability to remain docked to the ISS for up to 45 days. NASA is closely monitoring the situation and is prepared to address any further complications that may arise during the spacecraft’s mission.
