The State, contrary to what emerged in a trial before the Court of Crotone, will not disregard the tragic shipwreck that happened on February 26th. The Interior Minister, Matteo Piantedosi, assured the victims of the disaster that the State will make every effort to compensate them. A total of 94 people were killed in the shipwreck in Steccato di Cutro. The trial, taking place at the Court of Crotone, is against three smugglers of the shipwrecked gulet. The Guarantee fund for road victims has been sued by the victims’ lawyers as civilly liable, and its request for exclusion from the trial has been opposed. The fund is represented by lawyer Giulia Bongiorno, a senator of the League. Although its exclusion has been requested on the basis of the argument that the wrecked vessel had not been used for pleasure or public transport and therefore cannot be subject to the insurance code, the court has reserved its decision on the matter.
