The Sticky Situation: How Our June Heatwave is Bringing Uncomfortable Conditions

When you step outside on hot and humid days like this week, you quickly feel sweat forming on your skin. This is a natural response of the body to extreme heat as it tries to cool down. Our bodies like to maintain an average internal temperature of around 98.6 degrees, so when we encounter high temperatures, our body temperatures rise, prompting the release of sweat on our skin.

Sweating helps cool the body down through a process called “Evaporative Cooling,” where the water in our sweat evaporates off the skin, drawing heat out of the body. However, excessive humidity levels can interfere with this process. With a moist, tropical air mass over northeast Indiana, the high water vapor content in the air prevents sweat from evaporating effectively. This leads to a sticky feeling and the need to find ways to cool down, such as taking a cold shower.

The combination of extreme heat and humidity creates very uncomfortable conditions, making it important to stay informed about the weather forecast. Keep updated with the Live Doppler 15 Fury Storm Team as the June Heatwave comes to an end this weekend. Remember to stay cool and hydrated in these hot and humid conditions.
