The Two Factors Behind Binh Thuan’s Red Sand Floods

According to experts, heavy rainfall in a short period of time and urban infrastructure obstructing groundwater are the main causes of red sand floods in Binh Thuan. In the early morning of May 21, a flood of red sand fell on coastal road 706 connecting Ham Tien – Mui Ne after heavy rain. The sand flood led to the burial of motorbikes, cars, and houses, forcing tourist areas to relocate visitors to ensure safety.

Rainfall measurements during the night of the sand flood recorded nearly 200 mm in just 3 hours. Climate change expert Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Huy explained that such extreme rainfall events prevent water from seeping into the ground, causing sand floods. Sand has the ability to absorb water quickly, and usually, underground paths help maintain the stability of sand dunes.

However, the construction of housing projects and tourist areas near the coast has disrupted the natural flow of water. The structures built on sand obstruct the underground water flows from sand dunes to the sea, leading to sand floods. Dr. Huy emphasized the importance of allowing water circuits to operate freely to prevent sand floods.

Infrastructure around hills can act as barriers that prevent the natural flow of water when heavy rain occurs. This can cause the sand to become mushy and slide down due to water pressure. Master Nguyen Ngoc Thiep proposed planting trees on sand hills to limit the occurrence of sand floods. Residents are advised to be cautious and prioritize evacuation when sand floods occur.

Lastly, the unpredictability of sand floods makes it difficult to issue accurate forecasts for specific locations. Authorities and residents need to consider the natural characteristics of each region in development planning to minimize human intervention and reduce the impact of natural disasters.
