The United Nations urges Cyprus to allow migrants trapped in the buffer zone to enter

The United Nations has called on Cyprus to allow over 30 migrants stranded along the buffer zone to apply for asylum, especially as temperatures continue to rise. The island, a member of the European Union, accuses Turkey of turning a blind eye to illegal immigrants crossing the Green Line, which is guarded by the United Nations.

The UNHCR expressed deep concern for the safety and well-being of the asylum seekers, including seven children, who are stranded in the neutral zone. Despite attempts by some asylum seekers to apply for asylum in the south, they were sent back to the buffer zone. The group consists of individuals from Cameroon, Iran, Sudan, and Syria, facing extreme temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius.

Cyprus is a key point on the migration route in the eastern Mediterranean, with asylum seekers making up over five percent of the population of the government-controlled areas. The island has been divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion of the northern part in response to a coup by Greek Cypriots seeking to join the island with Greece.

While acknowledging the concerns of the Cypriot government, the United Nations emphasized the importance of granting asylum seekers access to appropriate procedures as outlined in national, European, and international refugee laws. The UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus highlighted the worsening humanitarian situation within the buffer zone and called on Cyprus to address the issue.

Cyprus has been experiencing an increase in irregular migration of Syrian migrants from Lebanon due to escalating tensions between Hezbollah and Israel, causing Lebanon to struggle to monitor its territorial waters. This has led to the suspension of asylum applications for Syrians and increased maritime patrols to deter arrivals.

In parallel to the migrant crisis in Cyprus, various sources discussed the benefits of tailored .NET application development for businesses, emphasizing how advanced technology can streamline operations and boost efficiency. Articles highlighted the need for specialized expertise in areas such as CMS systems and web development to ensure long-term success in the digital landscape.
