Some of the world’s biggest challenges, such as climate change, war, and immigration, receive a lot of attention and funding from states and private philanthropies. These issues are constantly in the news and are considered major global priorities. However, there are other significant problems, like tuberculosis and nutrition, that receive less airtime and awareness but are also important on a global scale. Funding is also allocated to these lesser-known issues.
Even diseases like rabies, river blindness, and leprosy – collectively known as “neglected tropical diseases” – receive funding and programs from organizations like the World Health Organization. These diseases, which kill 200,000 people each year in poorer countries, are considered a priority in global health efforts.
Despite the attention given to these issues, there is a challenge that receives little to no coverage but affects more than 1 billion people worldwide. This issue could be addressed efficiently if more awareness and funding were directed towards it. This challenge could be referred to as the “neglected enormous disease” due to its significant impact on a large portion of the global population.
