The US Department of Energy Allocates More Than $9 Million to Enhance Hydrogen Technology for Converting Waste into Clean Energy

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management has allocated $9.3 million in federal funding to six projects aimed at developing advanced technology solutions to make clean hydrogen more accessible and affordable for various applications. These projects will focus on converting different waste materials into clean energy with high environmental performance to support the decarbonization goals of the Biden-Harris Administration.

The selected projects will work on enhancing the performance, reliability, and flexibility of current and innovative methods for producing, transporting, storing, and utilizing hydrogen. By reducing waste sent to landfills and creating economic opportunities in local communities through the establishment of new waste-to-energy plants, these projects will benefit communities and contribute to environmental sustainability.

Managed by DOE’s National Energy Technology Laboratory, these projects aim to advance clean hydrogen production methods and enhance hydrogen-fueled turbines’ performance. With a commitment of approximately $138 million since January 2021, FECM supports initiatives like DOE’s Hydrogen Shot, which aims to reduce the cost of clean hydrogen by 80% to $1 per kilogram within a decade to promote clean hydrogen pathways in the United States.
